What does it mean when we say a toilet is Eco Certified?
Eco Certification provides third party informationm that enables consumers to select products that are least harmful to the environment. Eco Certification is intended to stimulate environmental concern in product development and promote a sustainable society.
The testing of the Multoa 60 was comprised of both laboratory and field testing. Testing and evaluation was conducted by an independent and specially selected test facility. The Norwegian Centre for soil and Environmental Research at the University of Agriculture in Norway. This is the most extensive testing in the world and serves both as an environmental control as well as a quality control.
In the test, the criteria definition of a closed (self contained) toilet system is "a toilet that is not connected to a drainage system for receiving feces and urine". Criteria stated that the toilet must handle waste from four people in a permanent use situation (with no drain installed). The end product must be safe and be utilized as a means of soil improvement.
The Multoa 60 was tested for:
- Material Quality - Mechanical and electrical components. leak proof operation, ventilation, and wear etc.
- Odour - No odours indoors or outside on or near the ground.
- Maintenance - Must be hygienic and easy to service.
- Capacity and Performance - Toilet must handle waste from four people using the toilet permanently and several periods of double usage. The usage is sustained for a long duration and the end product is evaluated.
- Environment - The finished compost is tested to ensure that it is hygienic to handle and environmentally safe. Limits are set to the allowable amounts of remaining bacteria, salt and nutrients, BActeria, pH, nitrogen, odour and consistency are tested.
- Economy - The power usage must be within set parameters with maximum of 320W.
At the University of Norway, 51.2kg of solid waste, 33 liters or urine and 60 rolls of toilet paper were added to the toilet over an 8 week period. The hummus tray was then removed and approx. 12 L or compost remained.
How it works
The patented re-circulation of warm air and adjustable thermostat, which can be set according to the number of people using the toilet, makes the cost of running a Multoa toilet very economical.
A fan pushes warm air under and around the compost in order to achieve the optimum temperature for fast decomposition and evaporation of liquid. A float switch operates heaters if excess liquid is detected. The toilets are eqipped with stainless steel mixing arms (with cutting blades) to break down toilet paper and and ensure that the compost is in a homogenous. The efficient mixing of the compost ensures ehogh oxygen which is vital to the process.
The mechanical ixing and aerating makes the material porous and sifts the composted portion into the hummus tray below. The non-composted portion and the dry portion are kept seperate.
All Multoa models are equipped with a compost cover that hides the toilet contents from view and opens automatically.
